Ditch the Guilt Review: Lemon Cheesecake Chocolate Bar
Ditch the Guilt, as the name suggests is a brand that claims their products satisfy one’s sweet cravings without the guilt & so we'll be putting that claim to the test in this review blog. The brand has gained attention for its variety of flavours and emphasises on quality products and a balance between macros containing carbs and protein.
Living with type 1 diabetes, I’m always on the lookout for low-carb snacks that make managing my blood sugars easier. Ditch the Guilt’s products stand out for being free from added sugars, offering great low-carb and vegan options. Their use of sweeteners like erythritol paired with stevia or monk fruit, and fructooligosaccharides (FOS), reflects their focus on balanced sweetness without the sugar spike.
If you would like to learn more about low carb and how it makes diabetes management easier, read these blogs and see our low carb video playlist.
DTG (short for Ditch the Guilt) is quite popular in my household because of its varieties of flavours in dark and white chocolates. They come up with different varieties to satisfy one’s sweet tooth. For this review, I’ve chosen the Lemon Cheesecake Chocolate Bar to see if it lives up to its claims of being low carb and satisfying sweet cravings. If you end up trying it too, put up a post on our Facebook community, Diabetes Support Network India and tag me too!
Taste and experience
Lemon cheesecake has a base of white chocolate, when you hear cheesecake you definitely want that piece to melt in your mouth giving you a tangy lemon flavour - and this bar delivers! If you eat it slowly, you will feel a creamy cheesecake texture melting in your mouth. This bar contains 17 gm of whey protein in a 60 gm chocolate bar with net carbs of 2.3 gm per bar. The sweeteners used in the product are a combination of monk fruit and erythritol. The chocolates are made with organic cocoa beans and they use cocoa butter instead of vegetable oil. Most of their chocolates are soy free and gluten free.
Effect on Blood sugar
I had 40 grams of chocolate after breakfast. My before and after breakfast readings were 151 and 116 mg/dl. Before eating this chocolate I took 3 units of insulin, according to my ISF.
If you're wondering what ISF is, it's Insulin Sensitivity Factor which tells you how much 1 unit of fast acting insulin will reduce your blood sugars. Another variable to keep in mind is ICR or Insulin to Carb Ratio which tells you how many grams of carbohydrate 1 unit of fast acting insulin covers for you. Both ICR and ISF need to be personalised, read this blog for more information.
If you're looking to calculate your own ICR and ISF values, you can do that on the Blue Circle Diabetes mobile app easily using the calculator in the app. Download the Blue Circle Diabetes mobile app on Android and iOS and read about all the app features here.
Packaging
What I appreciate most about the company is its commitment to simplicity. They use minimal ingredients and avoid preservatives or additives.
Their products are made to order if you order it from the company website which means you get a fresh product and could store it for six months.
The packaging usually is accompanied by an ice pack and each product is packed in a cardboard box with a plastic packaging or a double plastic packaging.
Availability and affordability
DTG products are widely available on platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Big Basket. They also have their own website where you can find exclusive discounts and offers.
The pricing can vary. On their website, the bars are often available in the range of 75-90/- if bought in advance. However, on other platforms the cost typically ranges from 175-190/-
I’ve also spotted DTG chocolates in a local shop - so it’s worth exploring stores nearby if you want to try them out.
Overall thoughts
Don't miss this video summary too-
DTG is doing a good job in satisfying the sweet tooth of people like us, who have various types of diabetes and have an interest in eating healthy, without the guilt. I wouldn’t recommend all their chocolates, but there are a few of them which certainly do justice to the taste and to our blood sugar. Their classic chocolate bars are really good, if you are not into experimenting, you can definitely go for the traditional flavours like plain, nuts, or berries. While the illustrations on the packaging are tempting and deceptive, they may not accurately reflect the product inside.
Without guilt, indulge in a Ditch the Guilt bar today!
