Everything diabetes

Welcome to our January Junction newsletter edition, where we spotlight impactful outreach & community-driven initiatives from our vibrant diabetes community. This month, we kicked off 2025 with meaningful engagement, raising awareness, and fostering connections among our community members.

We conducted two slum diabetes awareness programs in Mumbai, ensuring diabetes education reaches those who need it most. Across the month, we hosted 15 online & offline events, strengthening our community’s support network. We’re also thrilled to announce that orders are now open for the 6th edition of the Blue Circle Diabetes Calendar 2025, featuring 12 incredible people living with various types of diabetes.

Libre Pro update

We promised to share an update on the Libre Pro (the cheaper CGM/FGM option, about half the price of Libre 1)- here it is -

Quick background- we have been hearing the Pro would shut down since several years now, however since no stock was made available post the Feb ‘25 expiry lot, we knew the stoppage news could be real this time. Swinging into action, we created a survey to gauge your thoughts about the situation and the increasing prices. It was filled by hundreds of our supporters and community members and 99.1% of you said you are not comfortable with the price rise at ALL.

If you would still like to share your opinion on why diabetes care should be affordable for everyone, please participate in the survey & share - https://forms.gle/xyrcnXT5TE2ZE7Tw6

We formally presented these findings to the leadership at Abbott and made 2 requests - 1) don’t stop Pro, 2) Reduce sensor prices

We did not receive an explanation about the stoppage other than the Abbott leadership wants to talk to us. So we talked a few days ago hoping for a meaningful dialogue & and an understanding of the crushing out of pocket costs incurred by those living with diabetes & their families in India. Certainly it is possible to have an affordable CGM that makes business sense too, we alluded to the company.

Sadly our requests fell on deaf ears. Apparently the relatively affordable Libre Pro sensor is well on its way to being pulled out of the market for good

The company made a feeble attempt at saying they would think of some schemes for the community but upon asking for further clarification, none was made at that point in time. We will keep you posted if & when we hear any updates.

What happens next?

Hard times call for hard measures- since many of you have been asking, yes, sensors can continue to be used beyond expiry, despite it not being recommended with no chance of exchange in case of issues.

There are also a few new CGMs in the market now & we are exploring which ones can potentially match or better the pricing of the Pro sensors. In the coming days we will share a review of the Linx CGM and a few others. Stay tuned to this space for updates.

Blue Circle 🔵 Diabetes Myth Busters ✋

Hug trees for the right reasons, says Nupur 😂💚 it is NOT going to cure your diabetes or stimulate your pancreas. What other myths would you like to see busted? 👊

A little January history..

On 11th January, 103 years ago, insulin was first used in the treatment of diabetes. In Toronto General Hospital, 14-year old Leonard Thompson became the first human to receive an injection of insulin as a treatment for diabetes, administered by James Collip. The boy developed an allergic reaction and so more work was done to refine the treatment.Over the next 12 days, James Collip worked day and night to improve the ox-pancreas extract, and a second dose was injected on the 23 January. This was completely successful, not only in having no obvious side-effects, but in completely eliminating the glycosuria sign of diabetes.Children dying from diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) were kept in large wards, often with 50 or more patients in a ward, mostly comatose. Grieving family members were often in attendance, awaiting the (until then, inevitable) death. In one of medicine's more dramatic moments Banting, Best, and Collip went from bed to bed, injecting an entire ward with the new purified extract. Before they had reached the last dying child, the first few were awakening from their coma, to the joyous exclamations of their families.Insulin was discovered by Sir Frederick Banting, Charles Best and JJR Macleod at the University of Toronto in 1921 and it was subsequently purified by James B Collip.Let us work together to ensure we eliminate the stigma and lack of access around insulin.
